Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Imaging
Pella Regional utilizes a mobile PET/CT unit from Shared Medical Services for these exams. PET/CT exams are safe and effective diagnostic procedures. These studies help physicians diagnose a problem and select the best approach to treatment.
The PET scan pinpoints metabolic activity in cells. The CT takes cross sectional images of the body for anatomical reference. The combination of the two allows a physician to view metabolic changes in the proper anatomical context of the body.
For the PET portion of the exam, patients receive an injection of radioactive material called a tracer. The tracer loses its radioactivity very quickly (two hours) and only a very small amount is injected.
