Shingles Vaccine Available at Pella Regional
PELLA, Iowa—Shingles is a very painful and potentially debilitating disease. The shingles vaccine is recommended to prevent shingles for those 50 and older. The shingles vaccine is available at any of Pella Regional’s medical clinics.
Shingles is a painful rash that usually develops on one side of the body, often in the face or torso. The rash consists of blisters that scab over in 7 to 10 days and clears up in 2 to 4 weeks. For some people, the pain can last for months or even years after the rash goes away. According to the Center for Disease Control, in the United States there are an estimated one million cases of shingles each year and almost one out of every three people will develop shingles.
If a person has had chickenpox, they are more susceptible for getting shingles. “Patients 50 and older who have had chickenpox should receive the shingles vaccine,” said Amanda Yarkosky, RN, BSN, at Pella Regional. “If you do not know whether or not you have had chickenpox, it is best to get the vaccine.”
