Just Wash Your Hands and Tell Germs to Bug Off!

Date: June 15, 2007

Do you know who Miss Eileen Hygiene is? Why she's the clean queen and teaches children how to properly wash their hands. She is the main character in the fictional book, "Just Wash Your Hands and Tell Germs to Bug Off," which is being sold by Pella Regional Health Center.

The book is a collaborative effort between Central College, the Art Center Program at the Pella Community Center and Pella Regional Health Center. During the fall of 2003, Central College students enrolled in Elementary School Art read the poem to students in the Pella Community Center's After School Art Center Program. Then the Art Center students drew black and white pictures. Tilly Woodard, Cultural Affairs Manager for the City of Pella and Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Central College, then synthesized the drawings into illustrations and added color to them.

"This has been a great opportunity to integrate health, science, reading and art into a wonderful project," says Tilly Woodward, Cultural Affairs Manager for the City of Pella and Visiting Assistant Professor at Central College.

The cost of printing the full-color copyrighted book was donated by the Pella Community Hospital Auxiliary. The books are being sold for $5.00 at the Pella Regional Health Center Snack Bar, Main Street Books and may be ordered by visiting www.pellahealth.org or calling 641.621.2388.
You may also e-mail kwestercamp2@pellahealth.org to order your copies. A nominal shipping charge will be included. Be sure to include the number of copies you are wanting, your name, mailing address and a phone number that you can be reached at.

The Centers for Disease Control claims proper handwashing methods are one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs and prevent a person from getting sick.
