National Influenza Vaccination Week, Jan. 10 - 16
Date: January 11, 2010
PELLA, Iowa—National Influenza Vaccination Week, Jan. 10 – 16, is a national observance established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as foster greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January and beyond.
Since the spread of influenza is likely to continue into the New Year, the week is an important opportunity to promote flu vaccination at a time when demand for vaccine usually drops. While influenza is unpredictable, and while we do not know the likelihood of a future wave of influenza illness, we do know that if more people are vaccinated, the disease is less likely to spread in the coming months.
The seasonal flu vaccine is an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in people older than 6 months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions.
The single best way to protect against the seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year. Influenza vaccination appointments can be made through Pella Regional Health Center and their family of clinics. The cost for the vaccine shot is $25. Pella Regional will submit insurance information to cover the cost.
