He attended medical school at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg in Freiburg, Germany, graduating in 1999.

He did his internal medicine residency at the University of Iowa from July, 1999 through July, 2001.

He went on to complete a residency fellowship in nephrology at the University of Texas from July 2001 through December, 2004.
