Pat Birkel-- Pella Regional’s April Shining Star

Pat Birkel, April Shining StarPELLA, Iowa— Pat Birkel, Emergency, was recently selected by a group of her co-workers as the April 2014 Shining Star at Pella Regional Health Center.

Birkel, resident of Des Moines, was nominated based on her Attitude, Commitment, and Sense of Ownership.

Excerpt from her nomination:

“Pat gives outstanding patient care. I recently worked with Pat when she received a call from a parent regarding his child who was seen in Emergency, diagnosed and referred to a specialist for follow up care. The patient was a student, who gave consent to allow the father to call and speak with staff regarding several questions and concerns. Pat spent an hour speaking with the father, making multiple phone calls finding out answers to their questions, coordinating follow up care, speaking with Health Information Management to coordinate proper medical release of information and relaying that information to the patient and parent to ease the process. Most importantly, she followed our standards of HIPPA throughout this time, and did a fantastic job explaining the privacy situation to the parent. Pat went above and beyond to help this patient and the family with their needs and concerns. I believe her care absolutely displayed the care and compassion that Pella Regional hopes to see from all employees. She is a great example, and a very valued team member to our Emergency Department.”

Shining Star is a reward and recognition program at Pella Regional designed to acknowledge an employee each month that demonstrates outstanding standards of behavior and inspires others to do their best.

Birkel will receive a $100 gift, an ad in the local paper, a plaque, and will automatically be included in the Shining Star of the Year award.
